The Best Proxy Sites To Browse Anonymously - A Quick Guide

Proxy sites are services that let you navigate the web anonymously. With most of them, you’ll just need to type the link of the site you want to visit in their search bar, press Enter, and you’re now on that site with a different IP — and usually enhanced protection.

The five best proxy sites are:

  1. ProxySite
  2. Hide.me
  3. Whoer
  4. CroxyPoxy
  5. 4EverProxy

There are many more options, all of them with their advantages and disadvantages. Perhaps most importantly, no proxy site can guarantee 100% safety and anonymity. Only a good VPN like Surfshark will change your IP without exposing your information or heavily limiting your connection speed.

If you want to see our full list of the seventeen best proxy sites, or if you’d like to find out more about the best proxy sites and VPNs, keep reading our article below.

Hiding your IP when browsing the web can be extremely helpful. It helps you stay anonymous, protects your privacy, and even lets you unblock regionally restricted content.

That’s why we always recommend using a VPN to change your IP when using the internet. But maybe you’re not ready for a firm commitment with a VPN provider? In that case, you might love proxy sites.

What are Proxy Sites?

Proxy sites work in a slightly similar way to a VPN. They’ll route your traffic through their own servers, changing your IP, and making you anonymous in the process.

However, free proxy sites have downsides. Many of them will keep logs of people that use their service. So your IP may be hidden to the site you visit, but the government and your internet service provider will still have access to your browsing history.

That’s why the only way to maintain anonymity online is to use a VPN. Don’t forget to check our cheap VPNs list if you want a good, affordable alternative to a proxy site. For a quick solution, you can’t go wrong with Surfshark. It’ll also help you prevent ISP tracking.

Remember that a lot of proxy sites are free, or much cheaper than most VPNs. The downside: they don’t have a lot of servers. You won’t be able to access regionally restricted services like HBO Max because of this. These services just keep track of proxy IPs and still restrict your access to them.

Free proxy sites are mostly valuable for security, and to counteract government censorship. For example, if you live in a country like Pakistan, you might find it difficult to access some content, such as specific articles or religious content. A proxy helps you here.

The Best Proxy Sites

All the sites that we’ll list below can help you change your IP and gain access to sites that you might not visit in any other way. Keep in mind though, free proxy sites might log your activity! Don’t rely on proxy sites for 100% security when browsing the web. If that’s what you’re looking for, a VPN is what you need. Check our best VPN roundup to see the best options.

If you’re just looking for a quick fix, keep reading to see our picks for the best proxy sites.

#1 ProxySite

ProxySite-screenshot with logo

  • Pricing: Free
  • Key Feature: Great all around
  • Engagement: 14.03 million users/month
  • Servers: 36

ProxySite is one of the best free proxy services on the web. It has a sleek interface, a beautiful design, and it’s extremely intuitive to boot it up and visit any site with it. If the site you navigate to doesn’t have an SSL certificate (which is extremely important for your safety), ProxySite will encrypt your connection with SSL. With 36 servers, users are bound to find one that works for them. Not to mention, ProxySite is relatively fast, and it’s completely free to use.

ProxySite also guarantees that their service works with Facebook and YouTube (although we couldn’t verify that it works with YouTube), which makes it a brilliant choice for people that live in a country with a lot of censorship. Not to mention, the service is completely free and has a few dozen EU and US servers.

Needless to say, ProxySite is one of the best free proxy sites in the world.

And if you love their service, you can always buy the premium version, which is a fully fleshed VPN with enhanced security.

#2 Hide.me

HideMe screenshot with logo

  • Pricing: Free
  • Key Features: Advanced encryption protocols, browser extensions
  • Engagement: 2.23 million users/month
  • Servers: 3

Hide.me prides itself on enhanced security and privacy for its users. They have very secure servers that employ all the popular encryption protocols, like IKEv2, OpenVPN, SSTP, and SOCKS, to name a few. Above all, they also keep no logs of user data.

Hide.me also has Chrome and Firefox extensions, so as a proxy, Hide.me covers the basics and makes your browser more private.

But unfortunately, it also has some downsides. The biggest one is its server variety. Hide.me has three servers; in Finland, Germany, and the Netherlands. This means that you won’t be able to unlock content from the US, UK, or any other countries outside the ones mentioned. For people that need more servers and better protection, Hide.me also has a similar premium model to that of ProxySite. You can pay a monthly fee to upgrade the service to a full-fledged VPN.

But if you’re willing to upgrade to a VPN,  we recommend one of our best picks, like CyberGhost or ExpressVPN.

Visit ExpressVPN

#3 Whoer

WHOER screenshot with logo

  • Pricing: Free
  • Key Features: A lot of browser extensions
  • Engagement: 3.73 million users/month
  • Servers: 1

Whoer is not a comprehensive free proxy that anyone can use. Compared to the other two entries on this list, the free version of Whoer is much more barebones.

Here’s why:

  • You need to download it as a browser extension. There’s no way to jump into Whoer instantly.
  • You only get one server – in the Netherlands. So, that’s good if you just want access to censored content in your country, but it’s not ideal for people who want to, say, access a US server or region-specific content.
  • Whoer caps your connection speed at 1 MB/s.

Whoer’s redeeming factor is its availability. You can use it as a browser extension for Chrome, Firefox, Opera, and Yandex. But if that doesn’t sound appealing, we recommend one of the other proxies on this list or a free VPN.

#4 CroxyProxy

CroxyProxy screenshot with logo

  • Pricing: Free
  • Key Features: Easy to share URLs
  • Engagement: 6.02 million users/month
  • Servers: 1

CroxyProxy has a quirky name, a decent free version, and it’s extremely easy to use. It also features other benefits we’ve mentioned before, like enhanced security with permanent SSL encryption, regardless of whether the site you’re visiting has a certificate or not.

But CroxyProxy keeps on giving. You can use it on Android and Chrome OS, and you get a permalink for all the sites you visit. This means that you can easily share anything interesting you discover with your friends, regardless of the restrictions that might apply to you or them.

This kind of system can do wonders to help people from heavily censored countries get access to free information.

#5 4EverProxy

4EverProxy screenshot with logo

  • Pricing: Free
  • Key Features: Option to change IP while browsing
  • Engagement: 2.01 million users/month
  • Servers: 11

4EverProxy is a good all-around proxy site. For starters, it’s one of the few proxies on this list that can access YouTube. The fact that its design seems to be from the 21st century doesn’t hurt either. On top of that, 4EverProxy also has a large variety of servers (11 to be specific) and it’s pretty fast too.

Privacy and safety-minded users will also enjoy 4EverProxy’s customization options. Like most proxies, you can encrypt URLs, deactivate cookies, or even scripts. You can do this while browsing as well, by clicking on “Options” next to the proxy’s URL field. From there, you can also change your IP while you’re on a site, which is rare for proxy sites in general.

If you’re looking for one of the best proxy sites out there, 4EverProxy is definitely a top contender.

#6 Privoxy

Privoxy screenshot with logo

  • Pricing: Free
  • Key Features: Can be used on multi-user networks, ad blocker
  • Engagement: 100.58 thousand users/month
  • Servers: 1 (can be set up on multiple personal servers)

Privoxy works on a non-profit model, so you can expect developers that truly care about privacy and security. However, that also has some drawbacks. Privoxy’s UI looks dated, and you need to download their software to run it.

But if you get past that, you’ll find a powerful proxy. It has enhanced security features, flexible customization, and you can even use it on multi-user networks. Not to mention, Privoxy comes with its own ad blocker, which makes it a superb choice for privacy-minded individuals.

If you’re looking for a free proxy you can trust, and you’re willing to get over a clunky interface, Privoxy is the proxy you want. However, be prepared. It’s not easy to use Privoxy. You’ll actually need to go through the documentation before you can set it up.

#7 TurboHide

TurboHide screenshot with logo

  • Pricing: Free
  • Key Features: Browsing customization options
  • Engagement: N/A
  • Servers: 1

TurboHide continues our line-up of proxies with a terrible interface. It has no logo of its own, and the hyperlinks for popular services have extremely outdated graphics. On top of all of this, they only have one server, so there’s not a lot of customizability available.

But it’s completely free, which is why TurboHide makes it on our list. It has a few extra features we haven’t seen on any other free proxy sites so far. You can choose to deactivate cookies, scripts, or objects for the pages you navigate to. This helps users access exclusive content without fearing for their privacy or bandwidth allocation.

Any TurboHide user can also choose to encrypt the page or the URL of a site they access with the service. The added security never hurts!

#8 VPNBook

VPN Book screenshot with logo

  • Pricing: Free
  • Key Features: 256-bit SSL encryption, good speed
  • Engagement: 1.13 million users/month
  • Servers: 5

VPNBook is a free VPN & proxy service. It’s a very safe IP changer, using 256-bit SSL encryption. Not to mention, VPNBook is also very fast, especially when compared to other proxies. Their server variety is not huge though; you can choose a proxy from the US, the UK, France, Canada, or a random proxy. But it’s still more than what you’ll find with other proxies on our list.

Unfortunately, VPNBook can’t unlock YouTube. But other than that, most sites people would want to access with a proxy are available. Reddit, Netflix, or social media platforms all load extremely fast.

#9 NewIPNow

New IP Now screenshot with logo

  • Pricing: $8.80-$88/month
  • Key Features: Configurable location, easy set-up
  • Engagement: 90.58 thousand users/month
  • Servers: 10-100

NewIPNow has a different model than what we’ve seen so far. It’s a paid service, without any kind of free version, and it works in tiers.

Users can pay for the number of servers they want, which all cost a different amount of money each month. For example, 10 private proxies cost $8.80/month, and 25 private proxies cost $22/month.

All the pricing tiers also come with:

  • Configurable location
  • Unlimited Bandwidth
  • Easy set-up

And a bunch of other benefits. Add to all of that a sleek interface, no speed restrictions, and a plethora of servers to choose from (from all across the globe) and you get a very robust proxy site.

However, considering its pricing and customization options, it’s only a good proxy site for commercial purposes. If you’re willing to spend some money to get guaranteed anonymity online, a tool like CyberGhost is much better.

#10 FilterBypass

FilterBypass screenshot with logo

  • Pricing: Free
  • Key Features: Deep customization
  • Engagement: 512.06 thousand users/month
  • Servers: 2

FilterBypass has a clear purpose. It’s a free proxy that helps you unlock geographical restrictions on videos. It has instant buttons for several popular sites like Twitter, Twitch, Youtube, DailyMotion, and others. There’s also a Chrome and Firefox extension.

FilterBypass is also very easy to navigate, and it’s cross-platform, so you can enjoy videos with no geographical restriction on any device. The only two servers it has are in the UK and the US, which means you’ll get access to most video content if you use FilterByPass. Most of the restrictions don’t apply to those countries.

Streaming regionally restricted content is hard. Even if you get a new IP from a proxy, that might not solve your issues in the long run. Free proxy IPs can be flagged by streaming sites, which means that you won’t be able to use them after a while. That’s why a VPN will always help you more if you want to stream content safely and anonymously.

#11 KProxy

K Proxy screenshot with logo

  • Pricing: Free
  • Key Features: Can access trickier sites like Youtube
  • Engagement: 2.15 million users/month
  • Servers: 10

KProxy is your average free proxy site. It’s free to access, it has a decent amount of servers, hyperlinks for popular sites, and overall a decent interface.

It’s lower on our list though because it’s slow to load the sites you open, and because we don’t really know where its servers are. KProxy doesn’t tell you where they route your traffic.

It has a very bold guarantee from the creator – that all sites will work with the proxy. But we couldn’t really test this because we don’t know where each server is from. As far as we could tell, sites like Peacock or Pluto TV (which are only available in the US) don’t work on Server 1, Server 3, or Server 5. So take this promise with a grain of salt, but don’t disregard it either. KProxy is one of the few proxies that can access YouTube.

#12 Hidester Proxy

Hidester proxy screenshot with logo

  • Pricing: Free (Premium VPN available)
  • Key Features: Fast loading speed
  • Engagement: 1.24 million users/month
  • Servers: 2

Hidester Proxy is not a complex service. You only get two servers to choose from (the USA or Europe), and a minimal amount of security options to toggle, like whether or not to strip objects, allow cookies, encrypt URLs, or remove scripts. Unfortunately, Hidester is not an advanced proxy. You can’t use YouTube with it for example.

But any other website you’d want to visit will load very fast. This is a common feature for proxies that also try to sell a VPN. The servers they have are reliable. Hidester is one of these free proxy sites that also promote their own VPN. It’s a pretty expensive one though, so the free proxy is a good stand-in if you like their service, but can’t afford their product.

#13 UnblockProxy

UnblockProxy screenshot with logo

  • Pricing: Free
  • Key Features: Multiple servers (but we can’t vouch for them)
  • Engagement: N/A
  • Servers: 3

UnblockProxy isn’t the prettiest platform. Its interface is actually quite dated, but it’s not UnblockProxy’s biggest issue. To switch to a different server, you need to open a completely different URL from the header menu of UnblockProxy. The catch: these URLs don’t have an SSL certificate. They’re unsafe to navigate to, and we can’t certify their effectiveness for this reason. That’s why UnblockProxy is lower on our list.

Other than that, UnblockProxy is your average proxy site, with a default server in the UK. Just don’t expect to bypass YouTube. As is the case with a lot of proxy sites, Google will notice you’re using it, and block your access from YouTube entirely. You’ll just see an “Update Your Browser” notice.

#14 Jailbreaked (The Grows Network)

Jailbreaked screenshot with logo

  • Pricing: Free
  • Key Features: Part of the Grows Network
  • Engagement: N/A
  • Servers: 1

Jailbreaked is an effective, yet niched alternative for people that need a proxy. Its connection speed is relatively fast, and it guarantees user anonymity. You’ll get a new IP address in a matter of seconds. Jailbreaked also works with mobile devices, so it’s a good pick if you want to stay anonymous on the go. Not to mention, they have a “Security News” section for users that are interested in the latest cybersecurity developments.

Unfortunately, Jailbreaked doesn’t have an SSL certificate, and it doesn’t have a large variety of servers. The platform only has one server for you to use. But the real bummer is that this server is in the Netherlands. That might not sound like an issue until you realize that all the websites you visit will be translated into Dutch. For people that don’t speak it, it might be an issue. But they can still enjoy regionally restricted content like movies, TV shows, or forums (if they’re censored in the user’s country).

Jailbreaked is also part of The Grows Network, a series of former proxy mirrors that all lead to the same proxy today. Another example of sites from this network is China Grows.

#15 UnblockVideo

UnblockVideo screenshot with logo

  • Pricing: Free
  • Key Features: Good for streaming (but not much else)
  • Engagement: N/A
  • Servers: 6

UnblockVideo is a robust proxy site, made to help users unblock video content. While it can’t access YouTube, It’s still a viable choice to stream from sites like Netflix, Pluto TV, or platforms that feature unlicensed content. While its server library is better than most entries on this list (6 servers in Amsterdam, Canada, and Singapore), UnblockVideo doesn’t have a US server. This is a bummer for people that want to stream content only available in the US.

UnblockVideo also has some usability issues. If you want to enter a new URL while browsing a site with UnblockVideo, the text input will be white (on a white background). Essentially, you won’t be able to see what you’re typing. Moreover, some sites might not load properly, with on-page elements displayed all over the place. This was the case for us when we tried visiting Pluto TV with the service.

#16 Anonymizing

Screenshot of Anonymizing.com website page, with added logo in the corner

  • Pricing: Free
  • Key Features: Unblocks Facebook and YouTube
  • Engagement: N/A
  • Servers: 1

Anonymizing is a very simple, but effective proxy site. It’s based in Germany, and it’ll help you access most websites, including YouTube and Facebook. The service only has one server, but you shouldn’t let this, or the outdated interface, trick you into thinking it’s a weak proxy site.

Anonymizing’s strength lies in its security. You have a lot of safety options you can enable, like encrypting pages, URLs, or removing scripts. What’s even better is that you can delete all cookies after browsing. Anonymizing also uses SSL encryption, making it quite secure for accessing sensitive sites.

#17 DontFilterUs

DontFilterUs screenshot with logo

  • Pricing: Free
  • Key Features: Browsing security options available
  • Engagement: N/A
  • Servers: 1

DontFilterUs is a minimalist proxy service. The website design looks like it was put together in a notepad with HTML and not much else. But despite its visual shortcomings, DontFilerUs is a decent proxy site. it can’t unlock YouTube, but it’s still suitable if you need access to restricted content of any other type.

Just make sure DontFilterUs is not your first choice. It doesn’t have an SSL certificate, and its servers can get busy at times. Besides slow loading times, this can also mean you can’t access the internet if DontFilterUs is at capacity.

What To Look For When Choosing A Proxy

The most important aspects to keep in mind when choosing a free proxy are privacy and security. The safer you are when changing your IP, the better a free proxy site is. But the topic is a bit more complicated. For our roundup, these are the criteria we considered:

  • Server variety: The more servers a free proxy has, the more likely it is to help you unlock restricted content, and stay anonymous wherever you live.
  • Security: If a proxy service keeps logs on when you use their service, it won’t be much in the way of security. Governments and ISPs can still see your location and navigation history. In heavily censored countries, that’s especially a problem. If you believe you may suffer oppression because of the sites you visit, we only recommend you use a free proxy to download another VPN.
  • Extra features: If a proxy has other features like a Chrome extension or a mobile app, it will come in handy more.

If you don’t want to use any of our picks above, you can use these criteria to do your own research.

A VPN or a Proxy?

There are apparent differences between a free proxy and a VPN. Virtual private networks require a paid subscription, but they also pack a stronger punch. Their encryption is stronger, they have more features, and the best VPNs don’t keep any logs. Above all, you get faster speeds.

So our recommendation is always a VPN instead of a proxy. Here’s why:

  • It’s safer. VPNs don’t keep logs of your activity. Most of them also have extra security features, like a kill switch that shuts down your connection in case it’s infected.
  • It’s easier to use. Proxies can also be extremely easy to use, and using proxies is simpler. But a lot of proxies have clunkier navigation and UX, while VPNs are usually extremely beginner-friendly.
  • It’s faster. The best VPNs are relatively fast, resulting in a minimal loss in speeds.
  • It has more features. Most VPNs have extra tools to help you stream online content, protect your connection, or even enhance your privacy. However, don’t expect private emailing with a proxy. For that, you can choose one of the top secure email providers.

If you want to find out more about VPNs, we’ve got you covered. Our VPN Information section will get you started with everything you need to know. Oh, and for those of you that don’t want to bother doing all the research, you can just give Surfshark a try. It’s affordable, and it can do anything the best free proxy sites do – but better.

Go For a VPN!

A proxy site isn’t usually a complex service. You can type a URL address, and instantly change your IP to use the internet anonymously. However, considering the limited server variety of free proxy sites, they might not always be your safest pick to browse the web anonymously. You can also try out any of these free proxy servers.

Proxies are great, but they aren’t generally useful for things like accessing blocked websites like TikTok from countries like Russia, which really clamp down on censorship. Instead, you can use a VPN to unblock TikTok in Russia.

So if you liked this article, we recommend you also check out our VPN section. VPNs offer more safety and better anonymity. Here’s some recommended further reading on VPNs:

The Best Proxy Sites On The Web: Frequently Asked Questions

If you have any more questions about browsing the web anonymously, you’re in the right place. Below, you’ll find our answers to the most frequently asked questions about proxy sites.

The best free proxy site is the aptly named ProxySite. It has a decent free proxy server variety, it’s free to use, and it guarantees access to regionally restricted content. The creators of ProxySite also sell a VPN service if you want to upgrade to a stronger version of their tool.

ProxySite is just one of the best proxy sites out there. If you want more options, don’t forget to also read our best proxy sites article.

Contrary to popular belief, web proxy sites are easy to use. You don’t need tech experience to use one, you just need to open it in your browser. Most web proxy sites have a search bar similar to that of Google. Just paste the URL of the site you want to visit there, and you’re navigating more anonymously through the proxy.

Free proxy servers can be safe, but they don’t offer you full safety and online privacy. A safe free proxy server should:

  • Be configured correctly
  • Not log your data
  • Allow for HTTPS

If your free proxy doesn’t do these things, it is potentially unsafe. To make sure you have the best online protection, it’s better to opt for a VPN.
