Save Money on Your Netflix Subscription: a Short Summary

The price of a Netflix subscription varies per country. In Turkey, Argentina, and Brazil, for example, you pay much less for a subscription than in Sweden or Switzerland.

There’s a way to get a cheap Netflix subscription. With a VPN you can virtually change your location. For example, if you select a server in Argentina, Netflix will think you’re in Argentina and allow you to get a subscription for the Argentine prices.

ExpressVPN is an excellent VPN we can recommend for this purpose.

Netflix is one of the most popular streaming services worldwide. Although it gives its users a large offer of movies and series, some people still think it’s too expensive. This is no wonder, because even with the basic plan a subscription will set you back 107 dollars a year. You can try out their service for free for one month, but most of us are hooked after that. However, what some people don’t know is that the price for a Netflix subscription can differ greatly between countries.

We did some research and found the reason behind these differences. Below you can read all about it and find out how much they charge in different countries. Moreover, we’ll tell you how you can use this fact to your advantage.

Update October 2020: Netflix has been actively trying to counteract this discount method in recent years. In some cases and countries, it won’t be possible to get a discount any longer. This might be because you’ll have to provide a phone number from a specific country in order to take out a subscription, for example. Our test was done using an Argentine server, where we were able to take out a discounted subscription without any problems.

Update February 2021: Getting a Netflix subscription with a discount as described in this article is slightly more complicated for people who live in the EU. New regulations have changed the way credit card payments are handled to protect citizens’ security, which unfortunately also means that these credit cards often won’t be able to pay for Netflix subscriptions in countries outside the EU. While some local gift cards might work as payment instead, not all of them will.

Netflix in Another Country: Different Movies, Different Prices

Like all other TV channels and streaming services, Netflix has to negotiate about the broadcasting rights of movies and series. If the rights for a certain movie are owned by another company, Netflix isn’t allowed to show this movie on its platform. These rights are usually sold per country, meaning it can happen that Netflix is able to buy the rights to a certain movie in the US, but not in Britain. Because of this, the Netflix library looks different in every county.

However, we found that this isn’t necessarily the reason for the price differences of the subscriptions. For instance, the offer of Netflix US is three times as big as the offer on Netflix in the Netherlands. Even so, there are no big price differences in subscription between these two countries.

It’s more likely that Netflix bases their prices on the economic power of a country. If people from a certain country have relatively more to spend than people in other countries, they will be prepared to pay more for their subscription. For this reason, a Netflix account in Switzerland ($13.02) or Sweden ($9.99) is way more expensive than an account in Brazil ($3.94) or Argentina ($2.58). An extraordinary example of this is the price of a Netflix subscription in Turkey. Since the Turkish Lira has decreased in value over the last couple of months, a subscription only costs $2.30 a month.

Most of you will be happy to know that there is a way to profit from these extreme differences. We’ll explain how this works below.

How to Get a Netflix Account in Another Country

The nice thing about Netflix is that you can get an account without having to fill in your address. All you need is an email account, a password, and a way to pay. Because of this, it’s also possible to get a Netflix account in a different country than the one you’re planning on using it in.

However, you probably don’t want to spend your money on a plane ticket to Argentina. Luckily, there is a way to enjoy the Netflix pricing of a different country without having to travel there yourself.

Change your virtual location with a VPN

You can change your virtual location with a VPN. While this may sound difficult, it really is very simple. Simply install the VPN software on your pc, smartphone, or tablet and connect to the internet through a secure server. This VPN protects your data and allows you to go online as though you’re in a different country.

Most VPN providers have servers all over the world. All you have to do is pick a server in a county of your choice and connect to it. From that moment on, websites and other services will think you’re in a different country. Therefore, a service like Netflix will show you the prices of the country you’re pretending to be in and allow you to take out a subscription with these prices.

To make sure this works and your data is protected, we advise you to use a premium VPN service like CyberGhost, ExpressVPN, or NordVPN. These are solid and fast services with servers all over the world. The nice thing is that they also offer a money-back guarantee. This means you could technically use their service just to get a Netflix subscription. Then, if you don’t like the VPN you can get your money back, no questions asked.

Step-By-Step: Pay Less for Netflix!

Would you also like to benefit from a cheaper Netflix subscription? Below, we’ll show you how to do this step-by-step.

Step 1: Get a VPN subscription

Subscribe to a reliable VPN provider, such as CyberGhost. This easy-to-use VPN has a 45-day money-back guarantee on its longer subscriptions. This means you can try out this service first. Don’t like it? Then you can cancel the service again, free of charge, as long as you do so within the first 45 days of your subscription.

There are other good VPN providers besides CyberGhost as well, but in the step-by-step plan below we’ll be using CyberGhost as an example.

Step 2: Connect to a VPN server in Argentina

Turn on the VPN and select a CyberGhost server in Argentina.

Step 3: Go to Netflix

Surf to Netflix.com. You’ll see that you’re now on the Argentine version of the Netflix website. Follow the steps below:

  • Create a new account. You’ll get to see the prices in Argentine Pesos.
  • Select the desired package, such as ARG PESOS 449 ($5.83) for a Premium account. You can share this account with four users. You then pay only about $1,46 per person. In the U.S. you’d pay $15.99 for the same account.
  • Fill in your payment details. Unfortunately it often won’t be possible to pay via any local payment methods, excluding those available in Argentina. You can, however, pay by credit card.
  • Enter a phone number. We entered our mobile phone number, which isn’t Argentinian, and didn’t run into any problems.
  • After the payment has been completed, you can log in to your account.
  • You might be asked to enter your phone number again. We were able to skip this step.
  • Enjoy your cheaper version of Netflix!

Netflix discount Argentina

Once your subscription is set up, you won’t need your VPN account anymore. You can simply enjoy the discount forever. However, if you decide to keep your CyberGhost subscription, it’ll always help you stay safe and anonymous online. Moreover, it might be useful to you in a different way, namely to allow you to watch even more movies and series on Netflix. Below we’ll explain how a VPN can help you watch the Neflix content in another county.

Warning: During our research we also tested Hola, which calls itself a VPN, but isn’t. We strongly discourage using Hola at any time. If you use the free version of Hola, your IP address will be made available to their paying customers. This means others could potentially use your IP for illegal activities, shifting the blame to you. In the past, this has caused some Hola users to get in trouble with the law.

A Subscription From a Different Country Will Work for You

Once you’ve obtained your subscription through a VPN in a different country, you can use it as you normally would. For example, if you get an Argentine subscription while you’re actually in the US, you won’t have to connect to Argentine servers all the time. You can simply watch the American Netflix content for a lower price. Below you can see how much you can save on a subscription if you’re in the US but buy a Netflix subscription through an Argentine server.

Need More Movies to Watch on Netflix?

As you have seen, you can use a VPN to save money on your Netflix or other subscriptions! That’s not all there is to it: you can use that same VPN to gain access to the Netflix content of a different country. To do this, you just have to connect to a VPN server in the country of your choice every time you want to stream. If you want to know more about how this works, you can read our article on watching the American Netflix from anywhere in the world.

Conclusion: Netflix Discounts

Netflix’s content library is different in every country because of broadcasting rights. The difference in price between countries can’t be explained by the amount of content, however. More likely, the price for a subscription depends on the economic power of a country. In Switzerland, for example, a subscription is much more expensive than in Turkey.

With a VPN you can change your virtual location and profit from the price differences between countries. Some trustworthy VPN services are CyberGhost, ExpressVPN and NordVPN. Be wary of fake VPNs such as Hola that make your computer available to third parties.

If you get a Netflix account in another country, you’ll still be able to watch the streaming service in your home country, just at a lower cost. If you want, you can also get a YouTube Premium subscription at a cheaper price.

  1. I tried this with a US credit card, but the payment failed each time. Any idea how to get around that?

    • Strange… We didn’t face any issues with our credit card, or even when using a “foreign” phone number. We’ll research this and update the article as soon as possible! Thank you for bringing this to our attention.

  2. Does this only work on new subscribers? What if you have an existing account you’d like to continue to use?

    • When you already have an account with Netflix, your subscription is ongoing and will use the same rates as you signed up for at the start of your subscription. It is possible to switch an existing account to the prices in a different country, but to do so, you’ll have to cancel your account, wait until the end of your billing period, and then restart your account from an IP in that different country. Because of the added wait, it’s easier to set up a new account instead.

  3. Is there a way to change the billing country on an existing account?

    • Yes, there is. This procedure works the same as when you’re moving countries. Netflix says you’ll have to cancel your subscription, wait until the end of your billing period, then reactivate your account from the new billing country, so you can use that country’s rates.

  4. Is it not illegal to do this or is it a “grey area”?

    • It’s not illegal, since you’re paying for the product the same way any customer would – it’s just the amount that’s different. 🙂
